Sex and Menopause
How Does Menopause Affect Sex Drive?
The loss of estrogen following menopause can lead to changes in a woman's sexual drive and functioning. Menopausal and postmenopausal women may notice that they are not as easily aroused, and may be less sensitive to touching and stroking -- which can result in decreased interest in sex.
In addition, lower levels of estrogen can cause a decrease in blood supply to the vagina. This decreased blood flow can affect vaginal lubrication, causing the vagina to be too dry for comfortable intercourse.
A lower estrogen level is not the only culprit behind a decreased libido; there are numerous other factors that may influence a woman's interest in sexual activity during menopause and after. These include:
- Bladder control problems
- Sleep disturbances
- Depression or anxiety
- Stress
- Medications
- Health concerns
Does Menopause Lower Sex Drive in all Women?
No. In fact, some post-menopausal women report an increase in sex drive. This may be due to decreased anxiety associated with a fear of pregnancy. In addition, many post-menopausal women often have fewer child-rearing responsibilities, allowing them to relax and enjoy intimacy with their partners. Is There A Male Menopause?
Men's testosterone levels tend to decline during middle age. This decline is thought to lead to symptoms of "male menopause," including problems with sleep, sex, weight, and mood.
As some men get older, they find themselves sharing many of the same symptoms as their menopausal wives. They are carrying around extra weight they can't seem to lose, have problems sleeping, lose interest in sex, experience mood swings, and feel tired and depressed. It can't be menopause…or can it?
More and more researchers are beginning to agree that the natural decline in testosterone men tend to experience as they age can result in a cluster of symptoms known as "late-onset hypogonadism," which is commonly referred to as male menopause.
Just as a woman's levels of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone decline in her forties and fifties, a man's testosterone level also tends to go down with age.
"Males have a slow fall in testosterone from age 30. By 40 to 50, about 3 percent are testosterone deficient — and by 70 about 50 percent," says John Morley, MD, professor of internal medicine and geriatrics and chief of the division of geriatric medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo.
The Effects of Male Menopause
Dr. Morley says that not all men will experience symptoms of male menopause, but many will. "About half of men by [age] 70 will have male menopause," he says.Sensual Turah can help you rediscover the sexy in you for a more holistic and beneficial effect on the body, all without the negative side effects.Who wouldn't want that?
